Biographical Profile

Benjamin D. Tice P.E. is the proprietor of Tice Engineering. He has a wide range of experience in the field of mechanical engineering; Including assignments in the areas of commercial, research and medical facilities, factory automation, commercial and sport diving and, sporting forensics. Mr. Tice is a graduate of The University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and is registered as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a member of the ASME. Mr. Tice has written technical papers in the area of commercial diving equipment for the diving and research community and he holds an award for the development of a unique aluminum vehicle from the Aluminum Association of America.

 

Activities Profile

As a staff engineer for private companies, Mr. Tice has 14 years of experience doing engineering design, detailed machine design, product testing and R&D. This work includes a high level of experience in all phases of the project completion process. The following are some of the projects completed during this time: 

  • Design and fabrication of several machines for the automated assembly of deodorant stick components
  • Design and fabrication of automation machines for a variety of proprietary products. 
  • Design and fabrication of an automated sponge packaging machine. 
  • Design and fabrication of an automated cap closing machine. 
  • Design and fabrication of a computer controlled breathing simulator. 
  • Design and fabrication of a computer controlled water pressure cycling chamber. 
  • Project management for a refurbishment project of an environmental control chamber. 
  • Operation of a diving system testing laboratory. Work included fully instrumented breathing performance testing of diving and life support equipment as well as manned testing. 
  • Detailed engineering design of parts for a commercial diving helmet system. 
  • Forensic investigations of diving equipment failures.

Since 1997, Mr. Tice has conducted independent engineering work for various customers. Some of these are as follows: 

  • The complete mechanical design and detail drawings for several computer controlled breathing machines. 
  • Engineering site surveys of a research hyperbaric facility for the US Olympic training center. 
  • A forensic investigation of a bicycle suspension fork failure. 
  • Engineering verification of pressure vessel window calculations based on pressure vessel codes. 
  • Design of electrical connectors for instrumentation for use in hyperbaric chambers.
  • Re-tool design of an automated sponge packaging machine.
  • Engineering site surveys of a hyperbaric facilities.
  • Mechanical design of a hyperbaric facility fire suppression systems.
  • Several detailed designs of electronic enclosures.
  • Many design of modifications to plastics processing lines.
  • Design of hyperbaric door handling mechanisms.
